THELMA AND LOUISE
June 13, 2006

I must water the garden before I leave. I will not have the time to dig my new milky spore dust into the soil to protect against Japanese beetles, so that will have to wait until I get back. I really need to mulch a bit in some places, too, but I'm not sure that's happening. If I get to the recycling I can drop off some boxes. Otherwise, they'll have to wait.

I haven't gotten the 100 Chinese takeout boxes that Debbie from HodgePodge wants for favors at the Geranium Farm brunch. But that's on Saturday, and today is only Tuesday -- plenty of time. The idea is that I will buy them at a Chinese restaurant. How hard can that be? And how many Chinese restaurants can there be between here and Columbus? Thousands.

I haven't thought much about my speech for tonight. But it's only 6:30 in the morning, and my speech isn't until 7:00 this evening. So there's time.

And I haven't thought much about the fact that, after I've given my talk, DJ and I have to get into a rental car and drive all night from Columbus to Allentown, PA for another engagement because there is, literally, no plane from Columbus that will get me there by 9:30 in the morning. They don't have a redeye from Columbus to New York or anywhere else, for that matter.

Fortunately, DJ is a night person.

This will be like Thelma and Louise, only we won't drive over a cliff at the end, I tell her.

Okay, she says.

I thought she took it extremely well.

Let me count the ways in which this whole enterprise makes little sense. Except that each engagement is important in its own right and each was scheduled months before I realized how iffy the travel situation would be. And our remarkable travel plan does make it all possible, if not exactly what a person would call sensible.

Didn't I already get you a ticket to Columbus and back? my travel agent asked when I ordered our two one-ways back to Columbus for Thursday afternoon. I told her yes, she did, but I needed these, too, and that it was a long story.

Can you go back Thursday morning? she asked, clicking her computer keys.

No, I have to be in Westchester Thursday morning. It needs to be afternoon. But I could get to the airport by 1. It will all work: DJ and I can pack up, drive to Westchester, do my group there and drive right to the airport. Columbus to Allentown to Metuchen to Westchester to Newark to Columbus in two days. Works. Jeez.

There will be a way to do the things you should do. It might be a little outside the box, and it might alarm the people who love you, but there will be a way. So do what you must and rest when you can, and you'll be all right.

The Geranium Farm Cookbook has arrived! You can order it from the Farm, http://www.geraniumfarm.org./ Although I can claim little credit for anything in it, I will be signing copies at General Convention this Sunday at 11am and 1pm in the Church Publishing exhibit area, and it will also be available at the Geranium Farm Brunch on Saturday.
